In addition to managing park and conservation areas,
the Woodbury County Conservation Board conducts several other programs.
Each spring thousands of trees and shrubs are planted on public and
private lands as part of the board's Habitat Restoration Program. Native
grass plantings also provide valuable habitat and nesting cover and have
become an important part of the habitat program. Woodduck, kestrel, and
bluebird houses are built and distributed to provide nesting sites for
these birds. The WCCB cooperates with the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources on many stocking projects including fisheries management and
special releases of wild turkey and giant Canada geese.
Over 2,000 acres are managed for public hunting and
recreation. These wildlife areas are generally undeveloped natural areas
that are fenced, signed, and include a parking lot access. Wild turkey,
white-tailed deer, ring-necked pheasant, fox squirrel, and bobwhite
quail are popularly sought-after game species.
