Traveling Exhibits
The Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center plans to host a traveling exhibit entitled A Salute to Songbirds late April 2009 through July 2009. This hands-on, multi-sensory display will involve visitors while learning about the challenges migratory songbirds encounter. This exhibit is on loan from the Effie Yeaw Nature Center located in Sacramento County, California. It has been traveling in Iowa since 2007 thanks to a REAP grant. Be sure to visit once it arrives!
EDUCATIONAL TOPICS • Feathered Ambassadors - facts about songbird migration and international efforts aimed at understanding the reasons for declining bird populations • Song & Dance - why birds sing and how they learn • Nest Parasites and Predators - How cowbird nestling impostors and predators threaten songbirds • Create a Habitat - How you can create a beautiful area that attracts, feeds and shelters songbirds • Pet Cats & Songbirds - how to keep them both safe • How Many Birds in a Flock? - How scientists count birds and how we know about declining numbers • Look, A Baby Bird - when does it need to be rescued? • What is a Songbird - learn the determining characteristics • Songbird Cafe - How to choose coffee that preserves songbird habitat
INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES • Name That Tune - button-activated bird song recordings • Chest of Nests - drawers pull out to reveal labeled bird’s nests • Giant Bird’s Nest complete with “eggs” - a place to rest or role-play like a baby bird • Parabolic mic - use the mic to find the bird songs and see how birds can be counted by sound • Keyboard allows visitors to play piano notes and bird song • Interactive birdwatching computer game • Wheel of flight - spin it and see how the bird flies • Feather Magic - use light to make the colors disappear |
