Girl Scout Camp of Hills closed after 53 years.

Camp of the Hills, the Sioux Trails Girl Scout Council resident camp for 53 years, closed per the board of directors of the council.

Camp of the Hills, located in Stone State Park, was officially opened in 1924.  At that time it was one of 194 Girl Scout camps across the country.  The first building, the log cabin, was moved to the site in 1921 with early camping in tent units and centering around the main lodge and pool.

A new development plan was initiated in 1944, with construction of a new pool.  In 1949 the main lodge burned down and was replaced with the present dining hall, the Lola Ayers Lodge.  For 53 years, Camp of the Hills served as a center of summer resident camping, day camping and troop activities.

The Joy Hollow site, a 360-acre tract of land located north of Sioux City was developed as the Council's year-round program center to serve the multitude of needs required for troops, council programs and outside groups.
